WILDWOOD, N.J. — A 2-year-old boy survived a frightening medical emergency during a Jersey Shore vacation after authorities say testing revealed cocaine in his system.
The incident unfolded in Wildwood while the toddler and other children were staying at a vacation rental with their mother and 39-year-old Alexander T. Moles of Ringwood, New Jersey.
According to authorities and court documents, Moles was responsible for watching the children while their mother showered Monday morning. When she returned, she reportedly noticed that her 2-year-old appeared unusually sleepy.
The situation quickly became more serious when the child began experiencing difficulty breathing. Moles began driving the toddler toward a hospital, and emergency responders were contacted.
First responders administered naloxone, commonly known by the brand name Narcan, before the child was transported to Cooper University Hospital Cape Regional for additional treatment. Blood testing later showed cocaine in the toddler’s system.
Police search vacation rental
Investigators subsequently searched the Wildwood rental property.
According to court records, officers reported finding a partial pill, foil packets labeled as containing tapentadol hydrochloride, a plastic bag containing a white powdery substance and short plastic straws.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed the exact relationship between Moles, the child’s mother and the toddler.
Man faces multiple charges
Moles was arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child, possession of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of prescription legend drugs.
He was initially taken to the Cape May County Correctional Facility before being released under court-imposed conditions following a detention hearing Friday.
Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing.
